History
Since 1993, under the direction of Dr. David Keen (a Jamaican born Physician), teams of 15 to 20 volunteers have been traveling to Jamaica about three times per year to provide treatment, medication and supplies to the less fortunate residents of these areas.
These volunteers augment government run clinics screening for hypertension and diabetes, as well as treating many other ailments. Patients are also taught preventative healthcare and medications are distributed at no cost to the patients.
Without the mission trips, the residents of these areas would not have had the benefits of the wider range of services that are offered. Anywhere from 400 to 800 patients are seen in a given week!
All the team members fund these trips out of their own pockets and give up their vacation time to help those in need. Various pharmaceutical companies donate most of the medications and supplies, and some are even purchased by the doctors.
In August 2003, we expanded our territory to include the island of St. Vincent and in October 2004, we included Belize.
Caribbean American Medical Educational Organization, Inc. (CAMEO), a non-profit corporation, was formed to coordinate fundraising efforts to support these trips.
The objective of this organization is to continue to provide medical services to the rural areas of Jamaica, St. Vincent, Belize and later to expand these services into other Third World countries.
